Ciao a tutti! Come state?
In today’s post we are discussing capital letters and when to use them in Italian language.
In Italian they are called lettere maiuscole and we usually talk about them in the singular form:
Quando devo usare la maiuscola?
Devo mettere la maiuscola con i nomi propri?
The use of capital letters in Italian is quite different from English, we use them in just a few contexts, but it’s really important to get them right.
Below are the most important contexts where you need to use capital letters:
- At the beginning of a sentence, after a full stop, esclamation or question mark:
Oggi sono andata al supermercato. C’era troppa gente! Quindi ho deciso di andare via. Ho fatto male? Beh, non ho comprato quello che mi serviva.
2. Direct speech:
Paolo dice: “Sono tornato!”
3. Proper nouns, names of cities, places, people, countries, festivities, movies, books, ecc.:
Sara, Maria, Camilla, Roma, Milano, Venezia, Italia, Stati Uniti, Natale, Pasqua.
