In today’s post, we’ll brush up on the verbal tense of imperfetto, since I mentioned it in my previous post when I explained the expression “I used to…” in Italian.
Oggi ripassiamo il tempo verbale dell’imperfetto, visto che nell’ultimo post ho menzionato questo tempo verbale per spiegare l’espressione “I used to…” = “ero solito/a…” (Click HERE to read blog post).

Ora che avete visto il video e che sapete di cosa parliamo, possiamo ripassare tutto abbastanza velocemente!
Iniziamo! L’imperfetto si usa per esprimere un’azione ripetuta abitualmente nel passato. Esempio: Quando ero piccola, prendevo sempre il gelato al gusto puffo / Quando andavo a scuola, prendevo sempre l’autobus.
Let’s start! Imperfetto is used to express an action which took place regularly in the past. Example: When I was younger, I always used to eat smurf-blue ice-cream / When I went to school, I always used to take the bus.
L’imperfetto si usa per esprimere due azioni che avvengono contemporaneamente nel passato. Esempio: Marco cucinava e Luisa leggeva (Mentre Marco cucinava, Luisa leggeva).
Imperfetto is used to express two actions which happen simultaneously in the past. Example: Marco was cooking, while Luisa was reading (While Marco was cooking, Luisa was reading).
L’imperfetto si usa per esprimere un’azione nel passato che viene interrotta da un’altra azione. Esempio: Mentre tornavo a casa, è cominciato a piovere (imperfetto + passato prossimo).
Imperfetto is used to express an action in the past that is interrupted by another sudden action. Example: While I was going back home, it started raining.
L’imperfetto si usa per esprime qualcosa di cui si era convinti ma che poi non si realizza. Esempio: Pensavo venissi con noi al ristorante / Pensavo che stamattina mi telefonassi (imperfetto + congiuntivo).
Imperfetto is used to express something one’s is convinced of, but then does not translate into reality. Example: I thought you came with us to the restaurant / I thought you called me this morning.
L’imperfetto si usa per rendere più gentile una richiesta, prevalentemente nel parlato. Si chiama “imperfetto attenuativo”. Il valore temporale viene annullato. Esempio: Volevo un kg di mele, per favore. “Volevo” al posto del condizionale “vorrei”.
Imperfetto is used a form of politeness when asking for something; frequently in the spoken language. Example translates in En as: I’d like to buy a kg of apples.
